When discussing null hypothesis significant testing (NHST), textbooks often present the type I ($\alpha$) and type II ($\beta$) errors as the false positive and false negative rates, respectively, prompting readers to believe they are analogue to the same concepts used in diagnostic screening. In this post I discuss why hypotheses tests are not screening tests.
